When you walk into a Taoist funeral, you will typically see an altar with lanterns, fruits, candles, deceased photo, along with offering of deceased favourite food. In contrast to Buddhist funeral arrangements, there wont be any Buddha statue or symbol near area surrounding the deceased.

The Taoist funeral, usually held 3 or 5 days and is modest, solemn, and simple. Depending on the wishes of the family, the funeral can be taking place either in a Funeral Parlour or HDB Void Dec.

In addition to the Taoist customs, you will see Taoist Priest conducting rites on the final night. Taoist funeral vary according to dialect group: Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hainanese, Hakka and others.

Hokkien dialect, traditional ritual is known as “Tng Say Hong”
Teochew dialect, traditional ritual is known as “Shan Tang (善堂)”.
Cantonese dialect, traditional ritual is known as ‘Breaking Hell Gate (破地狱)”.
